A tragic accident unfolded off the Egyptian coast on Thursday morning when a tourist submarine carrying Russian vacationers sank near the resort city of Hurghada, resulting in six deaths and sparking a major rescue operation. The incident left 21 people hospitalized, including seven children ranging from two to 15 years old, as reported by Russian state media RIA Novosti.
The vessel, operated by Sindbad Submarines, was on a routine underwater excursion when it suffered a catastrophic failure about one kilometer from shore. According to the Russian embassy in Egypt, 39 people were successfully rescued. However, the fatalities, confirmed to be foreign nationals, have raised concerns over the safety of such underwater excursions.
A Routine Dive Turns Deadly
The submarine, designed for recreational tours, was supposed to take passengers on a journey 25 meters below sea level to view the coral reef and marine life. Advertised as a safe and reliable adventure, the company’s website boasts of its fleet’s Finnish engineering, capable of withstanding significant underwater pressure. Each submarine can accommodate up to 44 passengers and two pilots, with features such as personal viewing windows, air-conditioned cabins, and emergency safety equipment, including oxygen masks and life vests.
Despite these assurances, disaster struck at approximately 10:00 a.m. local time. While authorities have not yet confirmed the exact cause of the incident, preliminary reports indicate the vessel "crashed" during its descent. Survivors described a sudden jolt followed by water rushing in, leaving passengers trapped in a terrifying situation. The submarine’s distress signal triggered an immediate response from local authorities, and rescue divers were dispatched to the scene.
Investigation Underway Amid Growing Concerns
Egyptian officials have launched an investigation into the accident, with experts questioning whether mechanical failure, poor maintenance, or human error played a role in the tragedy. CNN has reached out to the Egyptian Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities for official comment, but no response has been provided yet.
The incident follows a troubling pattern of maritime accidents in the Red Sea. In November 2024, at least 16 people went missing when a tourist yacht sank amid warnings of rough seas. The four-deck, wooden-hulled yacht was reportedly in poor condition before setting sail. With tourism being one of Egypt’s primary sources of revenue, officials are under increasing pressure to enforce stricter safety regulations for recreational marine excursions.
A Community in Mourning
As news of the submarine disaster spread, families of the victims gathered at hospitals in Hurghada, awaiting updates on their loved ones. Some survivors recounted the harrowing experience of being trapped underwater before being rescued. "We felt a sudden impact, and then water started seeping in. It was terrifying," one survivor told local news outlets.
Authorities have pledged full transparency in the investigation, but the tragedy has already raised serious concerns about the oversight of tourism-related maritime activities in Egypt. The country’s Red Sea coastline is a major attraction for divers, snorkelers, and adventure-seekers, but recent incidents highlight the risks associated with poorly maintained vessels and inadequate emergency preparedness.
For now, the focus remains on supporting the survivors and grieving families while investigators work to uncover the cause of this devastating event.
